Workforce & History — For almost half a century, Lowland, Tennessee was the location of North America’s largest rayon manufacturing plant (Enka» Lenzing» Liberty.) At its peak, the Lowland facility provided as many as 5,000 jobs to the surrounding area. As demand for rayon fibers was replaced by nylon and rayon production gradually moved from North America to overseas, a subsequent lack of demand led to the closing of the Lowland plant.
Today, due to the ongoing presence of a major research laboratory (Oak Ridge) and numerous colleges and universities, East Tennessee continues to produce a continual influx of highly educated workers.
Status — A portion of the property is being cleaned to remove previous structures that are no longer needed, while leaving the existing concrete slabs and roads to assist with future building and/or storage development. Existing structures that will remain on the site include several metal buildings, each being 12,000 square feet in size, a water treatment facility, a 100,000 sq. ft. warehouse, and a 300,000 sq. ft. warehouse.
Three businesses are currently in residence at LIC: A&E Salvage/A&E Marketplace, Lowland Metal Processing Facility, and DNS Company.
